1)Getting to Ginzan Onsen from Tokyo Station

Traveling from Tokyo Station to Ginzan Onsen is straightforward. The nearest major stop is Oishida Station, accessible via the Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa line.

※ The Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa features a purple-based train design.

The train departs from Tokyo Station and stops at Ueno and Omiya in Saitama Prefecture. It connects with the Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko line toward Fukushima Station.
(Note: Some Tsubasa trains operate directly without transfers.)

The journey to Oishida Station takes approximately 3 hours and 20–30 minutes.

Once at Oishida Station, catch the Obanazawa Bus "Ginzan Line" (operated by Nagasaki Bus) right outside the station. The scenic ride takes around 30–40 minutes to reach the entrance of the hot spring town.

The initial train departs from Tokyo Station, stopping at Ueno and Omiya stations in Saitama Prefecture, where it connects with the Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko line towards Fukushima Station. (Note: Some trains run on this route independently.) After traveling approximately 3 hours and 20–30 minutes from Tokyo, you'll arrive at Oishida Station. From there, catch the Obanazawa Bus "Ginzan Line," operated by Nagasaki Bus, which departs right outside the station. A scenic 30 to 40-minute ride will bring you to the entrance of the hot spring town.

Please note that bus services are limited, so it’s a good idea to check the schedule in advance. The one-way fare is ¥1,000 per person and must be paid in cash — IC cards are not accepted.

2)Access from Yamagata Station to Ginzan Onsen

Because Ginzan Onsen has a limited number of accommodations, many travelers opt to stay in nearby Yamagata City and use it as a base for their visit.

The Yamagata Shinkansen connects Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station in roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes. From there, you can reach Ginzan Onsen either by continuing on the Shinkansen to Oishida Station, or by taking the local JR Ou Main Line. While the local line adds about an hour to the journey, it runs more frequently and can be a more convenient option overall.

An overnight stay in Yamagata City is highly recommended, especially if you want to explore nearby attractions like Yamadera Temple and the scenic hot springs of Zao Onsen, both well worth adding to your itinerary.

3)Access from Sendai Station to Ginzan Onsen

Many visitors begin their Tohoku adventure from Miyagi Prefecture, and Sendai Station offers convenient bus access to Ginzan Onsen, making it a great starting point for the journey.

From the JR Sendai Station West Exit (Bus Stop #23), board a Yamako highway bus heading toward Shinjo. The ride to Obanazawa takes approximately 2 hours and costs ¥1,900 per person for a one-way trip.

After arriving in Obanazawa, you can hop onto a local Obanazawa city bus — the same route that departs from Oishida Station — for a short 30-minute ride that will drop you at the entrance to Ginzan Onsen.

Yamako Bus also offers a convenient express service connecting Sendai Station to Yamagata Station, which can be a great alternative if you're planning to explore more of the prefecture.

4)Access from Yamagata Airport to Ginzan Onsen

For travelers coming from outside the Kanto area, domestic flights offer a convenient route to Ginzan Onsen. Yamagata Airport is served by Japan Airlines (JAL) and Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA), with regular connections from major cities such as Haneda, Itami, Nagoya, and Sapporo.

From the airport, you can take the "Oishii Yamagata Airport Sightseeing Bus," which provides a direct connection to Ginzan Onsen in about 80 minutes. The fare is ¥2,000 per person one way, and no advance reservation is required.

Since the sightseeing bus operates only three round trips per day, it’s recommended to check the timetable in advance for a smooth journey.

5)Private & Direct Transportation from Yamagata Airport

For those looking to secure private or more direct transportation, the Airport Liner operated by Obanazawa Taxi is a convenient option. The shuttle departs from the airport's main entrance about 15 minutes after your flight lands.

The ride to Ginzan Onsen takes roughly 60 minutes and costs ¥3,800 per person (one way). Please note that advance reservations are required — bookings must be made by 5:00 p.m. on the day prior to travel.

6)Access from Sendai Airport to Ginzan Onsen

If you're flying into Sendai Airport, reaching Ginzan Onsen requires a transfer via either Sendai Station or Yamagata Station. To get to Sendai Station, take the Sendai Airport Line operated by Sendai Airport Access Railway. The journey takes around 25 minutes and costs ¥660 per person (one way).

From Sendai Airport, there is also a direct express bus to Yamagata Station operated by Yamako Bus. This trip takes about 80 minutes and costs ¥2,000 per person. No advance reservation is needed, making it a convenient option for spontaneous travel.

7)Getting to Ginzan Onsen by Car

If you're driving to Ginzan Onsen, be sure to confirm parking arrangements with your accommodation in advance. Many ryokans have designated parking but may require prior notice.

For day visitors, the main option is the Taisho Roman-kan parking area located just outside the town. While it’s a large lot, spaces are limited — especially during peak travel seasons — so early arrival is recommended.
